Alternative Currency

Currency is basically something of value that can be traded by the holder in exchange for something else. The dollar bill is a widely-accepted form of currency, but it’s got a lot of company these days. It seems that a bunch of very rich people got bored and decided to create their own currency, again and again.

One particular movie moment comes to mind from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, where the pirate leaders came together with the “nine pieces of eight” to prove their identity/claim to their pirate kingdoms, and it was a bunch of junk. Buttons, marbles, hairpins and things were the substitute currency that signified who was in charge. Not valuable to you or me in this reality, but to anyone wanting to overturn a kingdom in that world, it was everything. The holders of said currency kept it hidden for this reason.

Today, various types of currency are entering the financial scene, both in real life and in virtual reality.😧 You got crypto or coin and NFT’s and virtual real estate and whatever else is out there with value that translates here in the real world, and it can be bought and sold, with actual cash value.

The metaverse is a thing. This week I heard about a hyperverse. Facebook isn’t Facebook anymore; it’s Meta. Instagram too. Like some very rich people got the idea to just start a whole new reality and assign value to things there, then other people jumped on and it got bigger and even more valuable.

Why do I say rich people? Who else could pull this off? From concept to development to infrastructure to rollout to marketing and implementation to keeping the government from regulating it right away, could you or I have made this stuff up AND gotten buy-in for it at this magnitude? Anything is possible, but I doubt that. The lawyers and financial advisors it took to weave this stuff into existence probably cost a fortune. Imagine that….

When I first started hearing about these alternative currency forms, I was skeptical. But I thought about it in terms of what currency actually is, and my tune changed–something of value, that can be exchanged for something else of value. It really is about who has it, who wants it, and what they’re willing to pay for it.

As for those who masterminded the exchange programs and the locales where the deals go down, it’s lucrative when others buy in and bring friends because they use currency and they pay fees to move it around from place to place. Winning. I’m jealous because my money isn’t long enough to jump in and be a baller right off (I’m so competitive all the time), but even a single dollar is still currency. So I’m not too bad off. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Anyway, I was doing some research and saw something about virtual planets and solar systems, or universes, and shook my head in total judgment, to be honest. But all of this is really a thing that looks like it’s going to be around for a while. It actually looks like it’s going to be the next big thing, so if you’re of the mind that investing is a wise lifestyle, perhaps you should consider the virtual places too. I’m not done researching, so I’ll be really slow about it myself, but have at it. Let me know how that goes for you.
